Date: 1943 Artist: Douglas, Morgan Size (in): 22.5 x 16 Size (cm): 57.2 x 40.6 Condition: B Linen backed: No This is an original WWII era propaganda poster issued by the Office of War Information in 1943 as OWI Poster No. 59 in support of the U.S. Crop Corps campaign. The colorful artwork by Morgan Douglas shows an American farmer with pitchfork and his wife with bountiful handbasket of garden produce in a pose reminiscent of Grant Wood’s iconic American Gothic painting. During WWII the United States government undertook a major effort to find farm workers among city dwellers, teenagers and others willing to support the war effort by joining the USDA Crop Corps. This poster is a vintage original issued during WWII showing modest toning from age and slight handling. The poster looks pretty well unused with no tape or pinholes but does have a small area with what looks like insect damage in the margin on the left edge near the center lateral fold line.
