These are vintage advertising trivets or hot pads for Hartford Bakery’s “Butter Nut Bread” and “Golden Toast Bread”. The Hartford Bakery, Inc. was a commercial bakery in Evansville, Indiana, later acquired by Lewis Bakeries in 1964. The items feature nostalgic illustrations of characters promoting the bread brands. Hartford Bakery was a family-owned business known for introducing the iconic “Bunny Bread” brand in 1947. The “Butter Krust” brand has deep roots in Texas, with a history linked to a family of German immigrants. Lewis Bakeries is one of the largest wholesale bakeries in Indiana. These trivets are likely made from pressed cardboard. Stained from being used and well loved by my grandmother over the years.
