By 1970, the economic pressure of the boycott proved successful. Major grape growers in the Delano area agreed to sign historic union contracts with the UFW. On September 8, 1965, over 800 Filipino farmworkers, represented by the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC) and led by Larry Itliong and Philip Vera Cruz, went on strike against table and wine grape growers.
